The Center of Music, Theatre and Dance offers programs for the recreational and the aspiring pre-professional student. In the coming season we will continue to
develop what we believe is a fantastic performing arts program by offering training in the areas of ballet, demi-pointe, pointe, lyrical, modern, tap, jazz, hip hop and musical
theatre.
Classical Ballet
A foundation for all dance, classical ballet originates from the hearts of the French Monarchy. At The Center for Music, Theatre and Dance the classical syllabus concentrates
on the Russian, English, French, and American techniques. Grace, poise, rhythm and musicality are developed through barre and center floor exercises.
Demi-Pointe & Pointe
These classes are recommended for the more serious student and will only be available to those students who take ballet twice a week and receive a recommendation from
their teachers. Our demi-pointe classes have developed wonderfully over the past four years and prove to be an excellent intermediary training tool in making the transition
towards full pointe technique.
Contemporary Modern & Lyrical
Contemporary, Modern and Lyrical dance explores the techniques of Limon, Horton, Graham and others. The movement incorporates sweeping, arcing and flowing motion, while
utilizing the full torso in contractions, as well as leg extensions and floor work.
Tap
Rhythm and percussion are explored through precise foot work indicative of the dance styles used in old vaudevillian shows, and historic movie musicals. Today’s tap technique
incorporates the old with the new by incorporating rapid intricate rhythms that are popular today.
Jazz
Jazz technique explores the isolations of head, shoulders, ribs and hips while incorporating dynamic traveling movement across the floor from jazz runs to leaps, turns,
and striking precision. The exercises develop agility, strength and coordination and are usually performed to popular music of our day.
Hip Hop
Explores a combination of contemporary dance styles as seen on TV in music videos and in concerts by many famous recording artists and groups. Hip Hop utilizes R&B and
Hip Hop music popular within the music scene today.
Musical Theatre
This program incorporates dance movement, musicality, voice exercises, singing, ear training, acting through monologues, commercial copy, poetry, etc. This program is
wonderful for the "outgoing" child and has also proven to be helpful to the child who is rather shy in nature. In an effort to enhance the level of performance in this venue,
these students are required to take one dance class per week in order to develop as a total performer.
Primary Program for Pre-School Children
Our primary program offers a combination class of ballet, tap and tumbling. The syllabus consists of creative movement involving circles and shapes which can translate
into arm movements for dance. The children explore rhythm and counting for musicality and learn to perform exercises across the floor involving skips and gallops. Basic ballet
positions and tap steps are continuously reviewed. Retention is developed which leads to following instructions and working together as a group. It is important to note that
training should remain creative and fun and not become too serious before the age of 8. At this stage, we want the children to develop an appreciation and love for dance.
Research also confirms that early childhood gross motor skills and retention are developed through repetition. At the Center for Music, Theatre and Dance we highly recommend
for 3, 4, and 5 year olds to participate in primary classes twice a week for accelerated learning.
Performance Dance Workshop
Performance Dance Workshop is offered to our more serious students on Saturday mornings. The workshop incorporates choreography from all dance genres but places a strong
emphasis on classical ballet technique. Participation is by teacher recommendation only and requires a serious and definite time commitment for additional rehearsals on the
weekends. The Saturday workshop class must be accompanied by two weekly ballet classes per week. The Performance Workshop prepares the students for special competitions and
performance opportunities. PWS may be chosen to perform with the Company of MTD. There are separate fees associated with The Performance Workshop. For more information, kindly
call the office.

The Serious Student
Those students who are interested in pursuing dance at the summer intensive program, performing arts high school, college, or as a career choice, would strive to develop
their technique by taking two to three ballet classes per week. This will accelerate the student’s ability to execute and master the art form.
